Located in a massive and beautiful old building on the edge of Oosterpark and near Artis Zoo, the Tropenmuseum (Museum of the Tropics) is a museum focused on information about and the study of cultures throughout tropical areas of the world.
Broken down into region specific areas, the museum includes exhibits on areas like Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean.
Highlights for visitors include a detailed exhibit on former Dutch colony Suriname, which details its history and all of the various cultures that have made it the melting pot it is, and an interactive exhibit on world music, which features listening stations, films and recording booths where visitors can try their pipes on vocal feats like yodeling and Tuvan throat singing.
It’s a great, educational way to while away a rainy day, and the interactive and colorful exhibits are designed appeal to children of all ages, with specific junior exhibits targeted toward children ages 6-13.
